Prepositional Phrases

A prepositional phrase is a group of words that begins with a preposition and ends with a noun or pronoun. These groups of words help us communicate more exactly, by providing additional information about nouns and verbs. When a prepositional phrase provides additional information about a noun, it is called an adjective phrase. When one provides additional information about a verb, it is called an adverb phrase.

The prepositional phrases in the following sentences have been italicized. The first sentence contains one prepositional phrase, the second contains two, and the third contains three. Which are adjective phrases, and which are adverb phrases?

1. A photograph of the game appeared in the newspaper.

2. The boy with the purple hair works at Westmount Mall.

3. Diana ran through the street with the winning lottery ticket in her hand.
